When the going gets too tough in Marrakech I head to the Atlas Mountains for a trip from Marrakech. The village of IMLIL is 90 minutes away and perfect for a day trip, or more, if you love hiking. Me, I love to sit on a rooftop taking lunch and letting the panoramic views work their magic.
So, what can you expect on a level of food? We have some great alternatives for you. here is part 1!

is as authentic as could be, and so is its location. You 'hardly' can't get more local in and around Imlil and the food is exquisite!

On my day out last week I was served some really delicious courses
First course was Harira, a rustic hearty Chickpea and lentil soup. The wooden soup spoons are locally crafted.
The second course I chose was a kofta and egg tagine. Kofta are small meatballs and are baked alongside freshly laid local eggs.
Dessert for Moroccans is usually fruit and these juicy sliced oranges came with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon, giving them an exotic little twist that complemented my meal in the mountains perfectly.

Wanneer het me allemaal net iets te veel wordt in Marrakech, dan trek ik het Atlas-gebergte in voor een reis.
Het dorpje Imlil is op 90 minuten afstand en ideaal voor een dagje uit, of meer, als je van wandelen houdt (denk Djemal Toubkal, de hoogste berg van Noord Afrika en de tweede hoogste in heel Afrika!) . Ik

Je kan nauwelijks iets meer lokaal krijgen in en rond Imlil
en het eten is er voortreffelijk!
Serieus 'weg van huis' Marokkaans uitzicht en eten.
Op mijn dag vorige week werden er me een aantal echt heerlijke gerechten geserveerd
Voorgerecht was harira, een klassieke stevig Kikkererwten en linzensoep.
De houten soeplepels worden lokaal gemaakt en stonden bijna recht in de kom!
Hoofdgerecht was een kofta tajine met ei.
Kofta gehaktballen zijn klein en worden vers gebakken daarbij worden lokale eieren van de eigen kippen geserveerd.
Dessert is meestal fruit voor Marokkanen. De sappige, in schijven gesneden sinaasappelen met een royale snuif kaneel, smaakten het geheel op een exotische wijze af.
Mijn maaltijd in de bergen was 'gewoon' perfect.
Lahcen, de eigenaar van Riad Atlas Toubkal, is veel meer dan dit. Hij organiseert en help waar mogelijk. Zo ook voor yoga en andere sessies in
, klimmen naar de top van Toubkal, of gewoon een workshop bij hem op het terras!

en het Marokkaanse zich ergens ontmoeten dan is het wel in de typische Beldi stijl van dit nieuwe hotel. Wat is 'beldi'? Beldi is een woord dat voor zowat alles in Marokko gebruikt wordt dat een vorm van authenticiteit in zich draagt. De typische Berber architectuur is eenvoudig en letterlijk 'down to earth'. Bouwen met wat je op het land vindt. Rond Essaouira zijn dat keien vanaf Marrakech richting de Sahara is dat rode leem. De vloeren in gepolierde cement waar regelmatig mineralen aan toegevoegd werden om tot een bepaalde kleur te komen. De muren werden met kalk bestreken en de natte ruimtes met tadelakt. Combineer daar veel natuurlijke houtkleur bij en rotan en je hebt meteen de ingrediënten voor het scandinavische wonen wat het

Zo een authentiek plattelands concept vinden in de Medina van Marrakech is zeldzaam, zelfs uniek! De familie El Idrissi gooide het over een andere boeg. Nadat ze al een traditionele riad hadden vormden ze hun eigen kleine stads boerderij om tot een 5 kamer hotelletje met restaurant. Alles heel gemoedelijk. Een eclectisch samengaan van kunst, vlooienmarkt vondsten en authentieke stukken. MARRAKECH - IF SOUK LIFE GETS TOO TRIGGERING

Als de Souks van Marrakech je letterlijk en figuurlijk te heet worden dan is er voor het figuurlijke deel nu een geweldige oplossing! Ze heet
en ze heeft me alweer een andere kant van de Red City laten ontdekken. Sahar verhuisde vanuit de States naar Marrakech en zoals met velen, het was liefde op het eerste gezicht.
Al vlug erfde ze ook de passie voor 'junken' van de plaatselijke bevolking. Oude versleten en afgeleefde gebruiks artikelen omvormen tot iets helemaal anders. De Marakshi's verwezen haar door naar de lokale buurt en de vlooienmarkt van Bab El Khemis. Daar ging een grot van ali Baba voor haar open.

Vorige week, in een verzengende hitte ging ik met haar op pad! Ik wist niet wat ik zag. Alles wat er in de souks wordt aangeboden en nog veel meer. Prachtige oude antieke deuren

. Art Deco meubelen van oude hotels in Casablanca. Vintage vijftiger jaren lampen, tafels, stoelen. Maar ook aardewerk, interieur spullen, korven....
Het grote verschil met de toeristen souks?
Ja, je raadt het al. De sfeer!
De gemoedelijkheid van de hele buurt. Het gevoel dat je op je gemak alles kan bekijken en je niet verplicht moet voelen om iets te kopen.
Sahar is ondertussen een echte 'connaisseur' geworden.

Het onderhandelen, daar ontkom je helaas niet aan, maar dat, is de ziel van het kopen en verkopen hier in Marokko!
Ever felt the heat shopping the Marrakech' souks was too hard to bare? I mean the heat of the pushy shop assistants and their 'must buy' attitude. Well, there happens to be a magical solution to it and her name is

Sahar is a real Junker, turning trash into unique pieces of ...anything you want. A passion that grew on her after she had moved to Marrakech from the States.
In her search for these one of a kind trash items, some locals told her about the flea market and the local souk area of Bab El Khemis.
This was like discovering the Treasure room of Ali Baba.
Anything you could dream of and lots more were there in a calm and serene atmosphere. No need to run away from those pushy shop assistants. It became her weekly addiction and she started to map the most important and to her most valued shops.

WHEN NATURE IS THE CANVAS - ANIMA MARRAKECH
The come-back of paradise.
I don't know about paradise, but
is internationally seen one of the most beautiful statue-art parks we've been too. The concept, design and realisation must have been the collaboration of some masterminds that were perfectly attuned with the 3D concept and the final result. It is just fascinating to see how new corners and views open up before you just by turning around or looking up. I've never enjoyed a parc this much. Both for these surprises, the architecture, the art and the abundance nature has to offer, with the Majestic High Atlas as a backdrop.

De terugkeer van het Paradijs.
Of het Paradijs ook een beeldentuin was weet ik niet, maar de droomwereld waar
je mee naartoe neemt is van wereldklasse. We durven te stellen dat het, door een samenwerken van factoren, het mooiste park is wat we ooit hebben bezocht. Om vanaf een braakliggend terrein in enkel jaren tot dit te komen moet je met een aantal masterminds samenwerken. De visie, de beplanting en de integratie van de beelden is zo perfect en tegelijk steeds weer verrassend dat het gewoon niet ophoudt om je te bekoren. Even omkijken en je ziet weer iets heel anders. Je verbeelding an je eigen perceptie worden voortdurend getriggerd. Deze tuin heb je nooit volledig gezien. Niet alleen om wille van de verschillende 'trompe l'oeil', maar ook de architectuur, de creaties en de overvloed aan natuur, met als meesterwerk de hoge Atlas op de achtergrond.
MARRAKECH - MINIMALISM

When you think about Morocco, minimalism is not the word you might have in mind.
If minimalism to you is about black, white and sharp lines, you might maybe want to skip, but to us minimalism is a soft balanced architecture that realises a lot with as little as possible. Here combined with the Marrakech'
and natural elements like wicker, wool and traditional architectural elements like tadelakt and tiles.
You open the door and you look for reasons to stay inside and not having to go out for the rest of your holiday!
Elza Bauza is one of the many inspiring single bohemian women we meet here in Morocco. She moved from beautiful
to Marrakech many years ago because she fell in love with the place. The riad is her one women's work (in spite of everyone telling her she was crazy to manage a team of local builders throughout the construction work) But boy, did she prove them wrong!
Elza's trust in herself and the people she works with and giving them responsibility is also reflected in the management while she is off on one of her adventures around the world. Her staff has the same warm welcoming attitude as her and that is all it needs to make one feel at home!
Bij de gedachte aan Marokko is minimalisme niet het woord dat meteen voor je opduikt!
Als minimalisme zwart, wit en strakke lijnen betekent dan is dit inderdaad niet aan jou besteed. Voor ons is minimalisme het natuurlijke evenwicht in de architectuur. Met zo weinig mogelijk middelen een zo groot mogelijke emotie realiseren. Hier in een zachte tint
en natuurlijke materialen zoals rotan, wol en traditionele bouw elementen als tadelakt en authentieke tegels.
Bij het openen van de deur en het betreden van de binnenkoer bekruipt je onmiddellijk het gevoel - hier wil ik blijven. De rest van je verblijf lijkt het er dan ook op dat je alle uitvluchten gebruikt die mogelijk zijn om dit te realiseren.
Medina?? nee, echt niet!
Elza Bauza, een van de vele inspirerende single vrouwen hier in Marokko, met avonturiers bloed in de aderen, kwam hier vele jaren geleden als jonge twintiger aan vanuit haar prachtige geboorteplek
. Marrakech had haar betoverd en de oude riad, die had haar uitgekozen!
Het werk werd een uniek avontuur. Op eigen gevoel en zonder enige opleiding nam ze de leiding over een team van lokale arbeiders tijdens de verbouwingswerken. Tegen alle raadgevingen van vrienden in, en het resultaat mag er na zo veel jaren nog altijd zijn!
Elza's vertrouwen in zichzelf en de mensen waar ze mee werkt vertaalt zich in het verdelen van de verantwoordelijkheid, alsook in het management van haar riad tijdens haar afwezigheid bij reizen overal ter wereld. Haar personeel begroet je met dezelfde gastvrijheid en warmte als die van haar, en dat is per slotte wat telt om je thuis te voelen, nietwaar?
