This was the first thing that came to mind when I visited her beautiful

, that she designed and restored from scratch in the medina of Essaouira,

Australian bedding with patterns that found their way back to Morocco! The circle w a s round!

Would she have been playing with the idea of one day, having this perfect hotel, and 'concept-store' -like, hipster proof hotspot, somewhere in Morocco?

I did not had the chance yet to ask her, but I'm thrilled she discovered this 17th-century old merchant house and turned it into a hotel with the help of

.

She could'nt have wished for a better way to display the beautiful bedding, her creative approach and a selection of locally designed ethnic goods.

For sure we will also find some items from her other company,

. Although most items are linked to Dubai, there is a same vibrancy and fun factor all through the designs and I firmly believe that Essaouira is ready to not only focus on localy produced goods. 

I think there is room here in and around the Médina, not only for surfers and backpackers, but also for trendy hipsters and city hoppers who want to have a fun shopping experience.

, I'm all pro your choice for 'colour of the year'!  But I must admit that I 'm still a die hard fan of your choice in 2013, Emerald green.

Also in Morocco, white, or rather different tones of white, play a major role in the styling of riads and hotels.  After a day in the souks with thousands of colours, it is just as pleasant to dream away in a quiet setting.

Wit is wat er te voorschijn komt als de natuurlijke ingredienten met elkaar gemengd worden.  En dat maakt het nu net zo 'anders' hier. Want wit is hier nooit net hetzelfde. Defining 'beldi'? 

Beldi is a word that is used for just about everything in Morocco that is somewhat  authentic. 

The typical Berber architecture is simple and literally 'down to earth'.

Built with what one can find on site.

Around Essaouira you should think stones and from Marrakech towards the Sahara it is mainly red mud.

The floors are in polished cement enriched with minerals in order to achieve a particular colour.

The walls are covered with lime and wet rooms with tadelakt. All this c

ombined with natural wood tones and rattan. All these  ingredients, colourwise, happen to be the basic for

Nordic living.

To find an authentic rural concept in the Medina of Marrakech is rare, if not unique!

The El Idrissi

family 

tried a different approach. 

After opening and running a traditional riad, they transformed their own little farm in the medina into a five room hotel with restaurant.

All very cozy.

An eclectic fusion of art, flea market finds and authentic pieces.

Combine this with an onsite traditional oven,  their house donkey, a handful of chickens and cats and the picture is complete.

en het Marokkaanse zich ergens ontmoeten dan is het wel in de typische Beldi stijl van dit nieuwe hotel. Wat is 'beldi'? Beldi is een woord dat voor zowat alles in Marokko gebruikt wordt dat een vorm van authenticiteit in zich draagt. De typische Berber architectuur is eenvoudig en letterlijk 'down to earth'.  Bouwen met wat je op het land vindt. Rond Essaouira zijn dat keien vanaf Marrakech richting de Sahara is dat rode leem. De vloeren in gepolierde cement waar regelmatig mineralen aan toegevoegd werden om tot een bepaalde kleur te komen. De muren werden met kalk bestreken en de natte ruimtes met tadelakt. Combineer daar veel natuurlijke houtkleur bij en rotan en je hebt meteen de ingrediënten voor het scandinavische wonen wat het

kleuren schema

betreft.

Zo een authentiek plattelands concept vinden in de Medina van Marrakech is zeldzaam, zelfs uniek! De familie El Idrissi gooide het over een andere boeg. Nadat ze al een traditionele riad hadden vormden ze hun eigen kleine stads boerderij om tot een 5 kamer hotelletje met restaurant. Alles heel gemoedelijk. Een eclectisch samengaan van kunst, vlooienmarkt vondsten en authentieke stukken. MARRAKECH - lost in paradise

de magie beginnen te werken en alle spanningen van veel te luide scooters, te opdringerige verkopers en te veel geuren en kleuren zullen verdampen als de sneeuw op de toppen van de Hoge Atlas. Dit terwijl je geniet van het zwembad, het dak terras en Fatima's kookkunst. Daarna zal het dwalen door de medina en de soeks van Marrakech je heel wat aangenamer vergaan, wetende dat je eigen privé paradijs vlakbij is en wacht om  je telkens weer te verwennen

LETS TALK riads

Het woord 'riad', je hebt het wellicht hier of daar voorbij zien komen tijdens je voorbereidingen voor een reis naar Marokko. Wat betekent het eigenlijk? Riad is Arabisch en betekent zo veel als traditioneel Marokkaans huis met een gesloten binnentuin waar er traditioneel op de hoofdlijn of in het center water aanwezig was.

Tegenwoordig wordt met riad veelal de kleine gastenverblijven bedoeld, die in de Médina in deze gerenoveerde prachtige huizen te boeken zijn.  De binnentuinen zijn nog steeds vaak open en worden als tuin, eetruimte of relax gebruikt. Soms zijn ze voorzien van een echte dip poel die in de zomer voor heerlijke koelte zorgt.

Binnen de stadsmuren in Marrakech zijn er ongeveer 1200 van deze

riads

en het is als toerist vaak moeilijk om de goede van de minder goede, en soms zelfs illegale te onderscheiden.  Een echte favoriet van mij is

Riad Mur Akush

.  De structuur van het huis is ten minste driehonderd jaar oud en gedurende deze periode zijn er heel veel renovaties gebeurd.  Vandaag huisvest de riad 6 gastenkamers met ensuite badkamers.  Voor mij de absolute max is het zicht vanaf het dakterras.  Een oude trap brengt je naar de derde verdieping waar je een 360 graden zicht hebt over de stad die helemaal reikt tot de Hoge Atlas. Op dit moment adembenemend!

This word ‘riad', is maybe one you have heard or come across doing research for a trip to Morocco.  It is an Arabic word meaning traditional Moroccan house with an enclosed, interior courtyard garden. These days a riad is most of the time used as a small guest house, usually with the bedrooms opening onto a beautiful inner sanctum used as a dining room or salon. It may even feature a dip pool. 

Within the medina walls of Marrakech there are up to 1200

riads

but one of my favourites is

Riad Mur Akush

.  The bare bones of the house are at least three hundred years old and over time it has seen many renovations. Today there are six stylish guest rooms, all with ensuite.  For me, the icing on the cake is the rooftop reached by climbing a lovely, stone timeworn staircase .  The three hundred and sixty degree views over the city, even to the Atlas mountains, are quite simply breathtaking.

MARRAKECH - THE POWER OF A PICTURE

 Did you ever get under the spell of a picture?

I did! It was the photo above. I guess by now it is 4 or 5 years ago and I remember seeing it in a magazine. I instantly fell in love with the mustard yellow setting and the luxurious glam.

I knew it was in Marrakech but then I forgot all about it...

Until I moved to, right, Marrakech!

And suddenly there I was, years later. Inside the house that had gotten me under its spell.

about! I finally was IN the room at Ryad Dyor.  It was as if I had been living there, it felt exactly as I thought it would feel... Luxurious and glam!

Werd jij ooit betoverd door een foto?

Ik wel! Het was die eerste foto met het mosterd-gele interieur. Ongeveer 4 of 5 jaar geleden zag ik deze afbeelding in een interieur tijdschrift. Ik bezweek ter plekke! Die luxueuse uitstraling en het glam gehalte in de combinatie van meubelen, kleuren en stijlen.

Het enige wat ik wist was dat het in Marrakech was...en ik woonde in België.

Het beeld werd weer levend toen ik uiteindelijk in Marrakech kwam wonen! (toeval?)

Daar sta je dan plots, helemaal zelf in dat huis dat je niet los lijkt te laten!

Toen Marokko een realiteit werd qua wonen en werken begon de riad (een Marokkaans medina huis), beetje bij beetje, zijn geheimen prijs te geven.

Maar het ogenblik dat je verbeelding aan werkelijkheid weet te koppelen blijft altijd heel apart.

Voor mij voelde het alsof ik ieder hoekje kende. Alsof ik terug thuis kwam van een lange reis. Het gevoel dat ik had bij het bekijken van de foto's was ook nu weer aanwezig. Luxe and glam, op een hele warme manier die je meteen doen wegdromen.

op Ibiza! Ook hun concept store op Ibiza is een schot in de roos om al dat inspirerends mee naar huis te nemen. Ik ben alvast begonnen om mijn eigen beach apartement in Essaouira te stylen en een oversized lounge corner op het terras is in 'the making'

Last weekend was all about adventures en hilarious situations around Essaouira. From having two huge Cane Corso dogs on our lap to ending up with the whole gang, dogs included, in a Berber wedding somewhere in the middle of no-where! Lost!... and not really invited...

There are 2 kinds of travelers. The ones that want to go on holiday to relax and the ones that want to go on holiday to discover and experience. 

Let me tell you, booking a riad in Morocco gives you both.

Booking a riad with a pool, an outside fireplace and beyond magic suites can give you a lot more!

It's a fairytale and we love stories with an open end, don't we?

it goes like this....

Many years ago there was an Englishman who got under the spell of the Mystical Marrakech.

There was just no escaping, he had to return time after time again and for every time, the spell became more obvious as he started to look around in old, abandoned houses...

little did he know the magic of Moroccan Riads.

He could not resist to buy one.

but that was not enough! He bought two, three, four...

They started to take control of his life. At night he was dreaming how they would look like.

His days were filled with trying to organize the construction works and explaining the magical dreams he had at night to the Moroccan builders.

It was hard at times, very hard, but that's the way magic is created...

The builders started to see the transformation.

The Englishman started to see his dreams come alive,

and the houses turned into these magical palazzo's 

waiting for you to come and visit.

The spell, however, you can not escape....

you will want to buy a house in Morocco too

just like the Englishman...

who is buying, and dreaming, and building for a 1001 nights to come...

Er zijn 2 soorten reizigers. Degenen die op vakantie willen om te ontspannen en degenen die willen ontdekken en beleven.

Neem van mij aan, het boeken van een riad in Marokko geeft u beide.

En een riad met een patio bad, buitenhaarden op het dakterras en magische suites die je verbeelding tarten geven je nog veel meer...

Het is een sprookje en we houden van verhalen met een open einde, nietwaar?

Het gaat zo....

Vele jaren geleden was er een Engelsman die in de ban geraakte van het Mystieke Marrakech.

Er was gewoon geen houden aan, telkens moest hij weer terugkeren en na elke reis werd de betovering sterker en duidelijker. Het werd zo erg dat hij zelfs begon rond te kijken in oude, verlaten huizen diep in de medina, in de steegjes met gesloten wanden waar het zonlicht schaars naar binnen dringt ...

Wist hij veel van de magie van de Marokkaanse riads!

Tot het te laat was en er niets anders meer op zat dan er eentje te kopen.

Maar dat was niet genoeg! Hij kocht er twee, drie, vier ...

De prachtige, verlaten huizen begonnen zijn leven te beheersen. 's Nachts droomde hij ervan hoe ze eruit zouden zien.

Zijn dagen waren gevuld met pogingen om de bouwwerken te organiseren en  zijn magische dromen te verwoorden aan de Marokkaanse bouwers.

Vaak was het moeilijk, heel hard zelfs, maar dat is de manier waarop magie wordt gemaakt ...

De bouwers begonnen de transformatie te zien en de Engelsman begon zijn dromen tot leven te zien komen.

De huizen veranderden in magische palazzo's, klaar voor u om ze te komen bezoeken.

De betovering, helaas, daar kunt u niet aan ontsnappen ....

Ook u zal een huis willen kopen in Marokko

net als de Engelsman

Die doorgaat met kopen en dromen en bouwen, nog 1001 nachten...
