MARRAKECH, my 5+ favourite bedrooms on the market
Ik weet niet hoeveel riads Marrakech telt in de Médina, maar er zijn er altijd een deel die wachten om van eigenaar te veranderen.
Veel creatieve talenten gaven reeds het voorbeeld, Bill Willis, wijlen Franca Sozzani, De Hermès familie, YSL, en nu recent het hardnekkige gerucht dat het Bvlgari imperium zijn zinnen heeft gezet op Marrakech. Het is een uitdaging en een passie om een oude riad om te toveren tot een paradijs met telkens een ander cachet, een andere stijl.

Wat is een riad?
Een
is een authentiek huis in de oude stad, de Médina, dat gebouwd is rond een centrale binnentuin. Alle kamers openen zich naar die centrale tuin en vanaf de straat heb je amper een paar of soms helemaal geen ramen. Op het verdiep vind je in de Marrakech architectuur een overloop met balustrade aan de 4 zijden, die rechtstreeks in contact staat met de patio. Die overloop (passerel) zorgt ervoor dat de kamers terugliggen en dus minder direct zonlicht krijgen, wat vooral op die snikhete zomerdagen een voordeel is. Het centrale binnengebied, de tuin (riad is het Arrabische woord voor tuin) is meestal rijkelijk voorzien van planten en water.
Water, één van de pijlers in de islamitische architectuur en ook één van de levensnoodzakelijke elementen in de erg droge zanderige gebieden.

What is a riad?
A
is an authentic house in the old town, the Medina, built around a central courtyard.
On the first floor you will find a 4-sided passageway open to the inner garden and in open air, this is the case for the Marrakech architecture. This passageway causes the rooms to recline and thus get less direct sunlight on those sizzling summer days.
The central atrium is usually rich in plants and water.
Water is one of the pillars in Islamic architecture and also one of the vital elements in the very dry and sandy areas.

Walk: ARTISTIC SPOTS IN MOROCCO - Diabat
Vanaf de eerste
keer dat ik dit kleine artistieke heuvel dorpje zag van op afstand, fluisterde iets mijn naam. Diabat, tegen de flank met zicht op Essaouira.
Die aantrekking komt zeker niet van de plaatsen die verwijzen naar het bezoek, het verblijf of ... van rock ster Jimi Hendrix, maar als hij hier echt ooit gepasseerd is, verbleven heeft, of volgens de verhalen, inspiratie opdeed voor een song, dan werd hij wellicht verliefd op het dorp om dezelfde redenen als ik.
Bijna ongerepte architectuur. Prachtig vormenspel van de kleine kleurrijke huizen die aan elkaar vastklampen, aanleunen, allen met dak terrassen en uitzicht in alle richtingen. De straten die parallel lopen met de oceaan hebben allemaal een schitterend panorama over de baai van Essaouira. Tot op heden kan ik alleen maar raden hoe prachtig dit moet zijn bij valavond, wanneer de zon onder gaat en vervolgens de lichten in de medina en langs de boulevard een heerlijk schouwspel moeten geven vanop je dak. De achterkant van het dorp heeft een prachtig uitzicht over de rivier die je diep meeneemt in het Berberse landschap en verder tot in Hererta.

From the first time I saw it from a distance, something whispered my name in the little artistic village of Diabat. For sure it are NOT the places that refer to the visit , the stay or...of the all famous
. But if he truly did pass there then he must have loved it for exactly the same reasons as I do.
Almost unspoiled architecture. Beautiful silhouettes of small colourful houses that cling together, all with rooftop terraces and views in all directions. The streets that run parallel with the ocean all have stunning views on the bay of Essaouira. This far, I can only guess how stunning this must look in the evening with all the lights in the Medina and along the boulevard. The backside of the village has another stunning view over the river that takes you deep into the Berber countryside and all the way to Hererta.
And then, modernisation came.... Please, don't let this take over the heart and soul of this charming town...

Al zoekend naar bronnen om jullie dit weekend te inspireren met Marokkaanse vakmanschap, belandde ik bij de nieuwe bloedmooie catalogus van
. Voor mij is er niets spannender dan te zien hoe eenvoudige Marokkaanse alledaagse items perfect samensmelten met de nieuwe minimalistische - boho - etnische interieur trend.

WHITE BEDROOMS - Our top 5 in Marrakech
Januari...het licht komt terug...en witte slaapkamers maken het net nog een beetje eerder ochtend!

Ik weet het zeker! Nog enkele weken en het voorjaarsgevoel is bij mij niet meer weg te slaan!! Misschien dat ik daarom al volop zit te stylen in off white, rotan en groen. Jawel Pantone, ik ben helemaal pro
. Maar ik moet wel zeggen dat ik nog steeds die hard fan ben van jullie keuze in 2013,
Ook in Marokko speelt wit, of beter verschillende tonen wit een grote rol bij het stylen van riads en hotels. Na een dag in de souks met zijn duizenden kleuren is het net even aangenaam om in een rustig decor weg te dromen.
Hierbij mijn vijf favoriete adresjes voor riads met prachtig witte gastenkamers.

, I'm all pro your choice for 'colour of the year'! But I must admit that I 'm still a die hard fan of your choice in 2013, Emerald green.
Also in Morocco, white, or rather different tones of white, play a major role in the styling of riads and hotels. After a day in the souks with thousands of colours, it is just as pleasant to dream away in a quiet setting.
Here are my five favourite riads with beautiful white bedrooms. We can't get enough of Moroccan whites. What about you?

Wit. Sneeuwwit, roomwit of gebroken wit. Het hangt er net van af. Wit is wat er te voorschijn komt als de natuurlijke ingredienten met elkaar gemengd worden. En dat maakt het nu net zo 'anders' hier. Want wit is hier nooit net hetzelfde. Kleurcodes bestaan niet omdat wit gemaakt wordt met kalk of wit zand andere natuurlijke materialen die voorhanden zijn. Puur wit komt daarom uiterst zelden voor. Laat je
door Marokkaans wit, in al zijn varianten op ons Pinterest moodboard :). Witte muren in Kalkverf. Tadelakt in roomkleurig wit of cement vloeren in gebroken wit. Het is vooral de combinatie met elkaar en de natuurlijke houttinten die het zo mooi maken.

is what emerges as the natural ingedients are mixed together. And this is what makes the 'difference'. Because white is never white as it was before. Colour codes do not exist because white is made with lime or other natural materials available. Pure white, therefore, is extremely rare. Get
by Moroccan white, in all its varieties at our Pinterest moodboard :). White walls in chalk paint, warm white tadelakt and off white cement floors. It's more in combining all these whites and adding natural woods to it that makes it so unique

Still impressed by this new hotel in Marrakech, and still a die-hard fan of La Famille we 'll take you on an interior design help tour, if only virtual, to show you ways to take home some of this and mix it with a Nordic style interior. The number of Moroccan interior design stores in the Netherlands is growing fast and Belgium is coming after but that might soon be different we have from a reliable source! so you do not REALLY have to take that lamp of half the size of the cockpit on that flight home. Unless you REALLY can't resist of course 😏. Therefore, hurray the Scandinavian style but 'never' without a touch of Moroccan sun, lazy vibe and 'je m'en fou' attitude.

in Marrakech, en ook wel nog altijd zwaar fan van
gaan we deze week op zoek om dit gevoel ook mee naar huis te nemen. Het aantal Marokkaanse interieur winkels in Nederland is ruim en ook België timmert heel erg aan de weg hebben we uit goede bron! Je hoeft dus ECHT niet met die halve cockpit van een lamp op die vlucht. Tenzij je natuurlijk ECHT niet kan weerstaan 😏. Daarom, lang leve de Scandinavische stijl maar 'never' zonder een vleugje Marokkaanse zon, lazy vibe en je m'en fou.

MARRAKECH - THE POWER OF A PICTURE
Did you ever get under the spell of a picture?
I did! It was the photo above. I guess by now it is 4 or 5 years ago and I remember seeing it in a magazine. I instantly fell in love with the mustard yellow setting and the luxurious glam.
I knew it was in Marrakech but then I forgot all about it...
Until I moved to, right, Marrakech!
And suddenly there I was, years later. Inside the house that had gotten me under its spell.
The riad that I already had published an
about! I finally was IN the room at Ryad Dyor. It was as if I had been living there, it felt exactly as I thought it would feel... Luxurious and glam!

Werd jij ooit betoverd door een foto?
Ik wel! Het was die eerste foto met het mosterd-gele interieur. Ongeveer 4 of 5 jaar geleden zag ik deze afbeelding in een interieur tijdschrift. Ik bezweek ter plekke! Die luxueuse uitstraling en het glam gehalte in de combinatie van meubelen, kleuren en stijlen.
Het enige wat ik wist was dat het in Marrakech was...en ik woonde in België.
Het beeld werd weer levend toen ik uiteindelijk in Marrakech kwam wonen! (toeval?)
Daar sta je dan plots, helemaal zelf in dat huis dat je niet los lijkt te laten!
Toen Marokko een realiteit werd qua wonen en werken begon de riad (een Marokkaans medina huis), beetje bij beetje, zijn geheimen prijs te geven.
Maar het ogenblik dat je verbeelding aan werkelijkheid weet te koppelen blijft altijd heel apart.
Voor mij voelde het alsof ik ieder hoekje kende. Alsof ik terug thuis kwam van een lange reis. Het gevoel dat ik had bij het bekijken van de foto's was ook nu weer aanwezig. Luxe and glam, op een hele warme manier die je meteen doen wegdromen.
Creatievelingen Alberto Cortes en Yvonne Hulst weten dan ook precies hoe ze je moeten triggeren met een interieur. Kijk maar even naar hun
op Ibiza! Ook hun concept store op Ibiza is een schot in de roos om al dat inspirerends mee naar huis te nemen. Ik ben alvast begonnen om mijn eigen beach apartement in Essaouira te stylen en een oversized lounge corner op het terras is in 'the making'
MARRAKECH - MINIMALISM

When you think about Morocco, minimalism is not the word you might have in mind.
If minimalism to you is about black, white and sharp lines, you might maybe want to skip, but to us minimalism is a soft balanced architecture that realises a lot with as little as possible. Here combined with the Marrakech'
and natural elements like wicker, wool and traditional architectural elements like tadelakt and tiles.
You open the door and you look for reasons to stay inside and not having to go out for the rest of your holiday!
Elza Bauza is one of the many inspiring single bohemian women we meet here in Morocco. She moved from beautiful
to Marrakech many years ago because she fell in love with the place. The riad is her one women's work (in spite of everyone telling her she was crazy to manage a team of local builders throughout the construction work) But boy, did she prove them wrong!
Elza's trust in herself and the people she works with and giving them responsibility is also reflected in the management while she is off on one of her adventures around the world. Her staff has the same warm welcoming attitude as her and that is all it needs to make one feel at home!
Bij de gedachte aan Marokko is minimalisme niet het woord dat meteen voor je opduikt!
Als minimalisme zwart, wit en strakke lijnen betekent dan is dit inderdaad niet aan jou besteed. Voor ons is minimalisme het natuurlijke evenwicht in de architectuur. Met zo weinig mogelijk middelen een zo groot mogelijke emotie realiseren. Hier in een zachte tint
en natuurlijke materialen zoals rotan, wol en traditionele bouw elementen als tadelakt en authentieke tegels.
Bij het openen van de deur en het betreden van de binnenkoer bekruipt je onmiddellijk het gevoel - hier wil ik blijven. De rest van je verblijf lijkt het er dan ook op dat je alle uitvluchten gebruikt die mogelijk zijn om dit te realiseren.
Medina?? nee, echt niet!
Elza Bauza, een van de vele inspirerende single vrouwen hier in Marokko, met avonturiers bloed in de aderen, kwam hier vele jaren geleden als jonge twintiger aan vanuit haar prachtige geboorteplek
. Marrakech had haar betoverd en de oude riad, die had haar uitgekozen!
Het werk werd een uniek avontuur. Op eigen gevoel en zonder enige opleiding nam ze de leiding over een team van lokale arbeiders tijdens de verbouwingswerken. Tegen alle raadgevingen van vrienden in, en het resultaat mag er na zo veel jaren nog altijd zijn!
Elza's vertrouwen in zichzelf en de mensen waar ze mee werkt vertaalt zich in het verdelen van de verantwoordelijkheid, alsook in het management van haar riad tijdens haar afwezigheid bij reizen overal ter wereld. Haar personeel begroet je met dezelfde gastvrijheid en warmte als die van haar, en dat is per slotte wat telt om je thuis te voelen, nietwaar?
