when I got infused with more playful vibrancy!  

Sanne Busk is from Denmark, but fell in love with Morocco, where she is living now. Busk is a full

time artist working in collage with hand painted paper.  The colours of Sanne’s art are mixed together in stunning, playful and sunny collages that unveil her passion for her work.  

Taking home a souvenir like this is like taking home a little piece of Moroccan sunshine and appetite for life.

From 1 hour up till 2 to 4 days, depending on what it is you want to achieve.  She will focus on helping you to discover your own creativity.

In a workshop, you learn how to make collage art with hand painted paper.

Collage is one of the easiest ways to get started in mixed-media art and really everyone can try it and have fun.  It's an easy, fast, and very satisfying mode of artistic expression. There are no rules to play by and you might end up taking your own ray of sunshine home!

I know for sure I'm going to try it out!

REMAINS FROM A PRE-INDUSTRIAL PAST - Essaouira

"The ruins of the sugar factory "Souira Qedima" near Ida O Gourd and its hydraulic network of 'aqueducts' still stand as a testimony to this forgotten history that lasted only half a century, but whose consequences are up until today still affecting the ecosystem.

Moroccan sugar is the perfect illustration of pre-industrial capitalism. The abuse, of tyrants thirsty for power and wealth, to take advantage of the resources of a country, then withdraw when their exploitation ceased to be profitable to reproduce the same pattern, under other skies...

This is what Fernand Braudel points out in his book on the birth of capitalism in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. 

"This newcomer, sugar cane, is devastating to the old equilibrium and is all the more dangerous because it is supported by a powerful capitalism, which came in the sixteenth century from all horizons, from Italy, from France, Antwerp. We can not resist it ... "

A walk through the beautiful countryside to what's left of the best remaining pre-industrial sugar factory globally,  left me full of wonder, with a bitter-sweet taste when I read the story of our guide Gilles Texier.

I could start to overwhelm you with historical backgrounds, figures, and details.

I could explain why it reminded me so much of the El Baadi palace in Marrakech, but I would only be able to share a glimpse of what you look at when you are there.

One can not even imagine how fertile this area really was before the devastating introduction of the sugar cane...

Sugar had (and still is) always been a Moroccan temptation. 

"Sugar follows the Qur'an," says the saying.  

It is true that as early as the 9th century there is a trace of cane cultivation in the regions of Fez and Tangier.  Until the 16'th century, we find traces almost all over Morocco and mainly in the Souss.

Throughout this long period, it is a low-intensity crop of a quantity and quality that is rather poor and an export oriented towards "Sudan" and the countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

In the first quarter of the sixteenth century, the arrival of the Saadian sultans in power will drastically change this situation.

The Saadiens from a very early stage, understand the economic value of the white gold for a new continent that opened its doors to them, Europe.

And so factories were built at the speed of light, and one of them was:

The Souira Qedima Sugar Factory.

This sugar factory and its hydraulic network were built, in all likelihood, between 1575 - 1578.

To establish such units, 4 conditions are necessary:

- wood in abundance

- water in abundance

- fertile lands easy to irrigate

and finally

- men, specialists, and workers

Mogador's sugar factory does not escape these requirements.

How this has changed the environment for ever and what an impact it had on human lives, I leave all this for you to discover when here.  You can

Workshop: BREAD BAKING IN THE RUINED GARDEN - FEZ

Before we have our selection of fantastic hotels in FEZ revealed,we're going to make some changes to the website. So let's start already getting you in a Fassi cuisine mood!

I am a self confessed bread addict and here in Morocco the bread is so good, so delicious and on the table at every meal. I rarely ate bread in Australia as it did not always agree with me but here it's quite a different story. It is fresh baked every single day  and no preservatives are used.

So due to this love of mine, I went off to the class at

The Ruined Garden

in Fes to learn how to make five different kinds of Moroccan bread. The ladies were so patient with me as stirred, rolled and kneaded. They have been making bread since they were old enough to toddle around a kitchen and they work the dough so quickly and efficiently.

My kneading skills left a lot to be desired but they sweetly overlooked my clumsy attempts and stepped in to ensure the final results were up to scratch.

Some of the breads are cooked in a lightly oiled pan over the heat and others are lined up on a tray to take down to the

community baker

. I carried the towel covered loaves down the alley and dropped them off in a tiny shop holding a monster wood burning oven.  This is what all the families do and the baker cooks all the bread for the neighbourhood.

I returned a while later to collect my bread, warm and yeasty and then got to taste it dipped in local olive oil.

Voordat we onwe selectie fantastische hotels in Fez bekend maken gaan we de website aanpaasen. Maar we willen u alvast in een Fassi kook stemming brengen!

Ik ben een brood verslaafde en hier in Marokko is het brood zo goed, zo lekker en op tafel bij elke maaltijd.

In Australië at ik zelden brood, omdat het me niet altijd goed beviel, maar hier is het een heel ander verhaal.

Het is elke dag vers vers gebakken en er worden geen conserverings middelen in gebruikt.

En dus, was ik dadelijk kandidaat om  naar een 'masterclass' broodbakken te gaan in

in Fes om vijf verschillende soorten marokkaans brood te leren bereiden.

De dames hadden een engelen geduld met me wat het roeren, rollen en kneden betrof.

Zelf hielpen ze met brood te bereiden vanaf dat ze oud genoeg waren om rond te dribbelen in de keuken en ze zijn meesters geworden in het bewerken van het deeg.  

Mijn kneedvaardigheden daarentegen lieten veel te wensen over, maar ze hielden mijn onbeholpen pogingen met argusogen in de gaten en grepen net op tijd in om ervoor te zorgen dat de eindresultaten op top niveau waren :) 

Sommige broden worden op het vuur gebakken in een licht geoliede pan en andere worden op een groot dienblad geplaatst om naar de

buurt bakker

te gaan.

Ik droeg de met een handdoek afgedekte broodjes door de steeg en liet ze achter in een kleine winkel met een gigantische houtoven.

Dit is wat alle gezinnen doen en de bakker bakt al het brood voor de buurt.

Na een tijdje ging ik terug om mijn brood, warm en geurend op te halen en daarna te proeven stukje bij stukje, gedompeld in lokale olijfolie. 

Hemels.

Walk: ARTISTIC SPOTS IN MOROCCO - Diabat

Vanaf de eerste

keer dat ik dit kleine artistieke heuvel dorpje zag van op afstand,  fluisterde iets mijn naam. Diabat, tegen de flank met zicht op Essaouira.

Die aantrekking komt zeker niet van de plaatsen die verwijzen naar het bezoek, het verblijf of ... van rock ster Jimi Hendrix, maar als hij hier echt ooit gepasseerd is, verbleven heeft, of volgens de verhalen, inspiratie opdeed voor een song, dan werd hij wellicht verliefd op het dorp om dezelfde redenen als ik.

Bijna ongerepte architectuur. Prachtig vormenspel van de kleine kleurrijke huizen die aan elkaar vastklampen, aanleunen, allen met dak terrassen en uitzicht in alle richtingen. De straten die parallel lopen met de oceaan hebben allemaal een schitterend panorama over de baai van Essaouira.  Tot op heden kan ik alleen maar raden hoe prachtig dit moet zijn bij valavond, wanneer de zon onder gaat  en vervolgens de lichten in de medina en langs de boulevard een heerlijk schouwspel moeten geven vanop je dak.  De achterkant van het dorp heeft een prachtig uitzicht over de rivier die je diep meeneemt in het Berberse landschap en verder tot in Hererta.

. But if he truly did pass there then he must have loved it for exactly the same reasons as I do.

Almost unspoiled architecture. Beautiful silhouettes of small colourful houses that cling together, all with rooftop terraces and views in all directions. The streets that run parallel with the ocean all have stunning views on the bay of Essaouira. This far, I can only guess how stunning this must look in the evening with all the lights in the Medina and along the boulevard. The backside of the village has another stunning view over the river that takes you deep into the Berber countryside and all the way to Hererta.

 And then, modernisation came.... Please, don't let this take over the heart and soul of this charming town...

and you are a lover of flea markets, then ensure your trip to this beautiful little seaside town includes a Sunday.  The souk El Had or The Joutia is an open air trash and treasure market on steroids, with overflowing secondhand stalls mixing with fruit and veg and artworks in one big, crowded melee.  If you intend on purchasing then hone your bargaining skills and come prepared to haggle for your chosen items.  You may find yourself taking home some unique souvenirs along with fabulous memories.

TRIPS FROM MARRAKECH - a foodtour to Imlil (part1)

When the going gets too tough in Marrakech I head to the Atlas Mountains for a trip from Marrakech.  The village of IMLIL is 90 minutes away and perfect for a day trip, or more, if you love hiking.  Me, I love to sit on a rooftop taking lunch and letting the panoramic views work their magic. 

So, what can you expect on a level of food? We have some great alternatives for you. here is part 1!

Riad Atlas Toubkal.

The food at

Riad Atlas Toubkal

is as authentic as could be, and so is its location. You 'hardly' can't get more local in and around Imlil  and the food is exquisite!

Serious home away from home Moroccan views and food.

On my day out last week I was served some really delicious courses

First course was Harira, a rustic hearty Chickpea and lentil soup. The wooden soup spoons are locally crafted. 

The second course I chose was a kofta and egg tagine. Kofta are small meatballs and are baked alongside freshly laid local eggs. 

Dessert for Moroccans is usually fruit and these juicy sliced oranges came with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon, giving them an exotic little twist that complemented my meal in the mountains perfectly. 

Here isfree gift number 4: a felted money purse

Wanneer het me allemaal net iets  te veel wordt in Marrakech, dan trek ik het Atlas-gebergte in voor een reis. 

Het dorpje Imlil is op 90 minuten afstand en ideaal voor een dagje uit, of meer, als je van wandelen houdt (denk Djemal Toubkal, de hoogste berg van Noord Afrika en de tweede hoogste in heel Afrika!) . Ik

, ik hou ervan om op een dakterras te zitten, te lunchen en te genieten van het panorama. Dat alleen al werkt voor mij als magie.

Wat kan je verwachten op gebied van eten gecombineerd met een authentieke daguitstap? 

We hebben enkele kleine lokale initiatieven en een meer professionele op een rij gezet. Vandaag deel 1!

Het eten in

is zo authentiek als zou kunnen zijn.  Evenal de ligging.

Je kan nauwelijks iets meer lokaal krijgen in en rond Imlil

en het eten is er voortreffelijk!

Serieus 'weg van huis' Marokkaans uitzicht en eten.

Op mijn dag vorige week werden er me een aantal echt heerlijke gerechten geserveerd

Voorgerecht was harira, een klassieke stevig Kikkererwten en linzensoep.

De houten soeplepels worden lokaal gemaakt en stonden bijna recht in de kom!

Hoofdgerecht was een kofta tajine met ei.

Kofta gehaktballen zijn klein en worden vers gebakken daarbij worden lokale eieren van de eigen kippen geserveerd.

Dessert is meestal fruit voor Marokkanen.  De sappige, in schijven gesneden sinaasappelen met een royale snuif kaneel, smaakten het geheel op een exotische wijze af.  

Mijn maaltijd in de bergen was 'gewoon' perfect.

Lahcen, de eigenaar van Riad Atlas Toubkal, is veel meer dan dit. Hij organiseert en help waar mogelijk. Zo ook voor yoga en andere sessies in

, klimmen naar de top van Toubkal, of gewoon een workshop bij hem op het terras!

In 5 years it hasn't been raining so many days in a row as it did these last months. It will be a promising spring and already now you can see yellow flower fields everywhere. As soon as the sun comes out, it's time to enjoy the white washed impressions and the beautiful reflections along the coast and the Medina. Morocco is a most wonderful place to spend some times during winter. Even a rainy month here is nothing compared to a rainy winter month in the North! And once the sun comes out, it's T-shirt time! I was on a tour in

Essaouira

and Sidi Kaouki and I just loved the blue tones in the air. Everything was new and subtle shades of blue were shifting in the reflections in the water. A lazy sunny afternoon in Sidi Kaouki was my topper to finish the weekend. And while I'm sitting and typing this, the rain pours down again. Within an hour I have an appointment on the beach...better go and search for my rubber boots 😅...

In de voorbije 5 jaar heeft het nooit zoveel dagen in een rij geregend als de afgelopen maanden. Het ziet er naar uit dat het een veelbelovend en groen voorjaar gaat worden en nu al zie je gele bloemen velden overal.

Zodra de zon er uit komt, is het tijd om te genieten van de wit gewassen huizen en de prachtige weerspiegelingen

langs de kust en de medina. Het is een absolute aanrader om ook in de winter in Marokko te komen genieten. Veel regen hier is nog altijd niet te vergelijken met een natte wintermaand in Europa en eens de zon er is, loopt de temperatuur al weer gauw op tot Tshirt niveau.  Ik was de afgelopen dagen in Essaouira en Sidi Kaouki en ik hield van de blauwe tinten in de lucht. Alles was nieuw en subtiele tinten blauw wisselden elkaar af in de reflecties in het water.  Een luie zonnige namiddag in Sidi Kaouki was mijn topper om het weekend af te sluiten.  En terwijl ik zit te typen stroomt de regen weer naar beneden. Binnen een uur heb ik een afspraak op het strand ... ik kan maar beter gaan zoeken naar mijn rubberen laarzen 😅 ...

ADOPT A DONKEY - they build the Marrakech Medina

After the success of our

previous post

on adopting one of the many Marrakech donkeys. We thought it was time to spend a more indeep article on this wonderful place. So I went for a visit!

A little way out of Marrakech is the

Jarjeer Mule

and Donkey Refuge. It is a wonderful place to visit run by Susan and Charles Machin. This sanctuary receives injured and abandoned mules and donkeys from all over Morocco. These lovely animals are nursed back to health and of course neutered, then spend the rest of their days in safety with food, water and warm stables. I recently spent an afternoon amongst them in their big enclosure, patting them and talking with Susan. On arrival, she promises each one that they will never again be tied up and they will be given a name. Anyone can visit and anyone can sponsor. This is such a deserving cause as there are so many animals that need our help in this country. For every riad that is built in the Marrakech Medina, a donkey was one of the team members. Often working long days with little or no food. At the end of their lives they are often pushed aside as the family is in need of a new donkey and there simply is no money to feed two.

Soon there will be a gift shop and a little cafe open at Jarjeer so I recommend everyone take a drive out to such a feelgood destination or visit their website to adopt or sponsor a donkey online!

over adoptie van een van de vele Marrakech ezels. vonden we dat het hoog tijd was om een artikel te besteden aan deze prachtige plek. Dus ging ik voor een bezoek!

Een beetje buiten Marrakech, richting het reservoir van Takkerkoust, bevindt zich

Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge

. Het is een prachtige plek om te bezoeken, gerund door Susan en Charles Machin. Dit toevluchtsoord ontvangt gewonde en verlaten muilezels en ezels uit heel Marokko. Deze mooie dieren worden verpleegd, gevoed en natuurlijk gecastreerd om dan de rest van hun dagen door te brengen in de veiligheid en de aanwezigheid van voedsel, water en zuivere stallen. Ik bracht onlangs een middag met hen door in hun grote behuizing, ging met hun om en praatte met Susan. Bij aankomst, belooft ze aan ieder dier dat ze nooit meer zullen worden gelaten, of vastgebonden en ze krijgen een naam.

Iedereen kan Jarjeer bezoeken en iedereen kan sponsoren. Dit is zo'n een geweldig initiatief in Marrakech waar we zo ontzettend trots op zijn! Er zijn ontzettend veel dieren die onze hulp nodig hebben in dit land. Voor elke riad die is gebouwd in de medina van Marrakech, was een ezel één van de teamleden. Vaak werken ze lange dagen met weinig of geen eten. Aan het eind van hun leven worden ze vaak verdrongen als de familie behoefte heeft aan een nieuwe ezel. Er is gewoon geen geld om een tweede ezel te voeden.

Binnenkort zal er een cadeauwinkel en een klein cafe worden geopend bij Jarjeer! Een mooie uitstap waar tourtjes door de omgeving met als gids een ezel ingepland staan! Ik raad iedereen aan deze feelgood bestemming te bezoeken of via hun website een ezeltje online te adopteren of sponseren!

MARRAKECH - SOMETHING'S ROCKING OUTSIDE THE KASBAH

Atlas Electronic Marrakech - September 1-4

It's not only the Marrakech' Medina that is rocking with talent and creativity. 

This time it's a new and promising art and music festival that got its spark a while ago in Rotterdam (the Netherlands).

Another one of the many initiatives that was started by young creative Moroccan expats who want to reconnect with their country of origin and WE ARE SO PRO these positive signals that encourage also young people here to get things going!

The line up sounds almost 'too' promising and Marrakech and Essaouira, with the upcoming

MOGA-Festival

in October, are well on their way in prolonging the European festival season that ends more or less at the end of August.

Het is niet enkel de Medina van Marrakech die tegenwoordig rockt van het talent en creativiteit!  Dit keer is het de geboorte van een nieuw en veelbelovend kunst en muziek festival, waarvan de roots in Rotterdam liggen!

Het is een van de vele initiatieven die tegenwoordig Marokko een nieuwe energie boost geven. Jonge Marokkaanse expats die terug de banden met hun land van herkomst willen aanhalen en wij ZIJN ZO HELEMAAL VOOR deze positieve signalen die onmiddellijk hun weerslag hebben op het talent hier aanwezig, om nog maar te zwijgen over die energieboost!

De Line up ziet er alvast helemaal te gek uit. Marrakech en Essaouira, met het aankomende MOGA festival in oktober, zijn onbewust wellicht op weg om het festival seizoen van Europa met een paar maanden te verlengen.

WHEN NATURE IS THE CANVAS - ANIMA MARRAKECH

The come-back of paradise.

I don't know about paradise, but

imaginative garden Anima

is internationally seen one of the most beautiful statue-art parks we've been too. The concept, design and realisation must have been the collaboration of some masterminds that were perfectly attuned with the 3D concept and the final result. It is just fascinating to see how new corners and views open up before you just by turning around or looking up. I've never enjoyed a parc this much. Both for these surprises, the architecture, the art and the abundance nature has to offer, with the Majestic High Atlas as a backdrop.

De terugkeer van het Paradijs.

Of het Paradijs ook een beeldentuin was weet ik niet, maar de droomwereld waar

beeldenpark Anima

je mee naartoe neemt is van wereldklasse. We durven te stellen dat het, door een samenwerken van factoren, het mooiste park is wat we ooit hebben bezocht. Om vanaf een braakliggend terrein in enkel jaren tot dit te komen moet je met een aantal masterminds samenwerken. De visie, de beplanting en de integratie van de beelden is zo perfect en tegelijk steeds weer verrassend dat het gewoon niet ophoudt om je te bekoren. Even omkijken en je ziet weer iets heel anders. Je verbeelding an je eigen perceptie worden voortdurend getriggerd. Deze tuin heb je nooit volledig gezien. Niet alleen om wille van de verschillende 'trompe l'oeil', maar ook de architectuur, de creaties en de overvloed aan natuur, met als meesterwerk de hoge Atlas op de achtergrond.
