MARRAKECH - IF SOUK LIFE GETS TOO TRIGGERING

Als de Souks van Marrakech je letterlijk en figuurlijk te heet worden dan is er voor het figuurlijke deel nu een geweldige oplossing! Ze heet
en ze heeft me alweer een andere kant van de Red City laten ontdekken. Sahar verhuisde vanuit de States naar Marrakech en zoals met velen, het was liefde op het eerste gezicht.
Al vlug erfde ze ook de passie voor 'junken' van de plaatselijke bevolking. Oude versleten en afgeleefde gebruiks artikelen omvormen tot iets helemaal anders. De Marakshi's verwezen haar door naar de lokale buurt en de vlooienmarkt van Bab El Khemis. Daar ging een grot van ali Baba voor haar open.

Vorige week, in een verzengende hitte ging ik met haar op pad! Ik wist niet wat ik zag. Alles wat er in de souks wordt aangeboden en nog veel meer. Prachtige oude antieke deuren

. Art Deco meubelen van oude hotels in Casablanca. Vintage vijftiger jaren lampen, tafels, stoelen. Maar ook aardewerk, interieur spullen, korven....
Het grote verschil met de toeristen souks?
Ja, je raadt het al. De sfeer!
De gemoedelijkheid van de hele buurt. Het gevoel dat je op je gemak alles kan bekijken en je niet verplicht moet voelen om iets te kopen.
Sahar is ondertussen een echte 'connaisseur' geworden.
geeft ze een tour met haar favoriete adresjes. Een ECHTE aanrader om het andere soukgevoel te ontdekken!
Het onderhandelen, daar ontkom je helaas niet aan, maar dat, is de ziel van het kopen en verkopen hier in Marokko!
Ever felt the heat shopping the Marrakech' souks was too hard to bare? I mean the heat of the pushy shop assistants and their 'must buy' attitude. Well, there happens to be a magical solution to it and her name is
!
Sahar is a real Junker, turning trash into unique pieces of ...anything you want. A passion that grew on her after she had moved to Marrakech from the States.
In her search for these one of a kind trash items, some locals told her about the flea market and the local souk area of Bab El Khemis.
This was like discovering the Treasure room of Ali Baba.
Anything you could dream of and lots more were there in a calm and serene atmosphere. No need to run away from those pushy shop assistants. It became her weekly addiction and she started to map the most important and to her most valued shops.

MARRAKECH - SOMETHING'S ROCKING OUTSIDE THE KASBAH

It's not only the Marrakech' Medina that is rocking with talent and creativity.
This time it's a new and promising art and music festival that got its spark a while ago in Rotterdam (the Netherlands).
Another one of the many initiatives that was started by young creative Moroccan expats who want to reconnect with their country of origin and WE ARE SO PRO these positive signals that encourage also young people here to get things going!
The line up sounds almost 'too' promising and Marrakech and Essaouira, with the upcoming
in October, are well on their way in prolonging the European festival season that ends more or less at the end of August.
Party People go Morocco! For just this touch of 'difference'.

is heaven on earth. This eco-friendly complex has an amphitheatre
where James Holden & Maalem Houssam Guinia will open the first edition of the festival on
September 1st with an exclusive concert. The swimming pool, olive groves and other sites are

Het is niet enkel de Medina van Marrakech die tegenwoordig rockt van het talent en creativiteit! Dit keer is het de geboorte van een nieuw en veelbelovend kunst en muziek festival, waarvan de roots in Rotterdam liggen!
Het is een van de vele initiatieven die tegenwoordig Marokko een nieuwe energie boost geven. Jonge Marokkaanse expats die terug de banden met hun land van herkomst willen aanhalen en wij ZIJN ZO HELEMAAL VOOR deze positieve signalen die onmiddellijk hun weerslag hebben op het talent hier aanwezig, om nog maar te zwijgen over die energieboost!
De Line up ziet er alvast helemaal te gek uit. Marrakech en Essaouira, met het aankomende MOGA festival in oktober, zijn onbewust wellicht op weg om het festival seizoen van Europa met een paar maanden te verlengen.

WHEN NATURE IS THE CANVAS - ANIMA MARRAKECH
The come-back of paradise.
I don't know about paradise, but
is internationally seen one of the most beautiful statue-art parks we've been too. The concept, design and realisation must have been the collaboration of some masterminds that were perfectly attuned with the 3D concept and the final result. It is just fascinating to see how new corners and views open up before you just by turning around or looking up. I've never enjoyed a parc this much. Both for these surprises, the architecture, the art and the abundance nature has to offer, with the Majestic High Atlas as a backdrop.

De terugkeer van het Paradijs.
Of het Paradijs ook een beeldentuin was weet ik niet, maar de droomwereld waar
je mee naartoe neemt is van wereldklasse. We durven te stellen dat het, door een samenwerken van factoren, het mooiste park is wat we ooit hebben bezocht. Om vanaf een braakliggend terrein in enkel jaren tot dit te komen moet je met een aantal masterminds samenwerken. De visie, de beplanting en de integratie van de beelden is zo perfect en tegelijk steeds weer verrassend dat het gewoon niet ophoudt om je te bekoren. Even omkijken en je ziet weer iets heel anders. Je verbeelding an je eigen perceptie worden voortdurend getriggerd. Deze tuin heb je nooit volledig gezien. Niet alleen om wille van de verschillende 'trompe l'oeil', maar ook de architectuur, de creaties en de overvloed aan natuur, met als meesterwerk de hoge Atlas op de achtergrond.

Ben Ali - two expositions with a 'heart'
Elizir and Mashi Mushki Galleries, in association with Sofitel Essaouira Mogador and Association Essaouira Mogador, are proud to present two solo exhibitions by Ben Ali (Abdelghani Didouh) – a Souiri artist recently described as a ‘genius’ by leading Italian art critic Corrado Levi.
BEN ALI: A RETROSPECTIVE (2006-2016) will take place at Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa from 15 July 2016 to 4 September 2016. The exhibition will span the artist's career from 2006-2016 and will comprise 30 paintings and sculptures.

BEN ALI: AT SEA, featuring a selection of 20 new works, will be held at Dar Souiri (the home of Association Essaouira Mogador) from 26 August to 4 September 2016.

The exhibitions will raise funds for Essaouira-based charity Project 91, to establish a fund for the widows of fishermen lost at sea in the town’s famous blue ‘flouka’ boats. The curators will donate their fees (20% of sale price) to the fund.

BEN ALI: A Retrospective (2006-2016) zal plaatsvinden in Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa vanaf 15 juli 2016 tot 4 september 2016. De tentoonstelling zal de carrière van de kunstenaar overspannen 2006-2016 en zal 30 schilderijen en sculpturen tonen.

The artist
Ben Ali (Abdelghani Didouh, born 1966) has been working as an artist since the mid-2000s, in a small studio in the Joteya (junk market) of Essaouira’s crumbling industrial quarter. He chose his name out of respect for his father, the painter Ali – a major figure in the Essaouira art scene, whose challenging works presented graphic depictions of human sexuality.
After working for many years as a fisherman, Ben Ali took up painting when the sea stole his boat, his friends and one of his brothers. Since then, he has been creating strange, darkly colourful works on wood, canvas, furniture and other 3-D objects. The exhibitions will feature a selection of new and earlier pieces reflecting this wide variety of formats.
Ben Ali says he paints “because I am my father’s son” and because “for me, fishing and painting are the same”. “I continue the work of my father. In my paintings there are all the ghosts, that little by little appear on the canvas like the memories of a childhood dream."
Italian art critic and long-time Moroccan resident
believes both Ben Ali and his father are artists of great distinction: “Geniuses are rare: to find two in one family is even rarer. Ali: the body and substance…Ben Ali: the spirit and transparency. Two geniuses.”
And for expert in contemporary art Michel Bohbot, Ben Ali’s world is “a human comedy…joyful, alive, sensual…anchored in the real.”
De artiest
Ben Ali (Abdelghani Didouh, geboren 1966) is werkzaam als beeldend kunstenaar sinds het midden van de jaren 2000, in een kleine studio in de Joteya (rommelmarkt) de afbrokkelende industriële wijk van Essaouira.
Hij koos zijn naam uit respect voor zijn vader, de schilder Ali - een belangrijke figuur in de Essaouira kunstwereld, waarvan de werken
uitdagende
grafische afbeeldingen van de menselijke seksualiteit portretteerden.
Na vele jaren als een visser te hebben gewerkt, begon Ben Ali met schilderen toen de zee zijn Flouka zijn vrienden en een van zijn broers opeiste

Sindsdien creëert hij vreemde, donkere kleurrijke werken op hout, canvas, meubilair en andere 3-D objecten.
De tentoonstelling zal een selectie van nieuwe en eerdere stukken bevatten die deze grote verscheidenheid van formaten

Ben Ali zegt dat hij schildert " omdat ik de zoon van mijn vader ben" en omdat "voor mij, vissen en schilderen hetzelfde zijn".

A SUMMER IN ARTIST KATHY LUCOFF GODIN"S HOUSE
I feel blessed! My dear friend, art collector and artist Kathy Godin asked me to stay in her house in Essaouira to take care of her two lovely dogs. I couldn't have thought of a nicer place then this one to spend part of my summer. But more is there to come, On Wednesday another good friend in Marrakech, Synnove Holte and I are going to make a road trip to the Sahara by public transport. I love this idea and I am sure it will inspire me for some hilarious, yet authentic and pure moments to share with you. We are checking out on different hotels and resorts for my selection on yoga venues and for my tours. At the same time we are going to check up on the date-farm Synnove is supporting in Merzouga.
Here are some shots on this nice house I'm spending my time in right now. It feels to me as a blend from Essaouira and L.A. clear, vibrant saturated colour splashes and one of my Boucherouite carpets!

MY LITTLE HIDE AWAY
Some months ago when I was looking for nice and less known locations to visit while driving to Kasbah Tamadot coming from Marrakech, I stumbled upon an artist residence in the small town of Tahanaout. A concept resembling the spirit of the Villa Medici, settled in the middle of olive trees in Tahanaout. Al Maqam, a little bohemian oasis created by artist/painter Mohamed Mourabiti, one of the contemporary Moroccan painters with several individual and group exhibitions both in Morocco and abroad. In 2000 Mohamed Mourabiti chooses to install his atelier and showroom in Al Maqam and the place quickly takes on the appearance of a literary lounge.
Its vocation: to provide artists the conditions and the means to develop their art and accompany them in their process of creation. Thus, all forms of art have right to quote : painting, music, poetry, sculpture, photography, literature etc. Al Maqam also offers a restaurant open to visitors on reservation, while strolling in the garden, the bookstore, the workshops, or wandering into the gallery with exposed the work of Mourabiti and other contemporary Moroccan artists . The whole concept creates a fertile alchemy if one is to judge by the number of encounters and experiences that took place there.
THE FEMALE ART OF BOUCHEROUITE
Every time I see a boucherouite, I can't help thinking what was going on in a woman's mind while creating the carpet.
Was she happy to create?
Was she worried because she had to keep her family warm?
Was she bored to make another carpet out of tiny pieces of fabric?
Were her dreams far beyond making these carpets being a child?
No one will ever know, but fact is that a lot of dreams, disillusions and hopes must have passed in the hours sitting , thinking and creating....
It is a passion of me to try and read the carpet. Sometimes it seems a story to be continued, and other look like a repetitive act of making small squares in wich one can relax and wander of in his mind while turning fabrics into colorfull pieces of art...
I always handle them with respect, respect for the soul of the person behind...
With every carpet we sell we help to make a dream come through
