TRENDSPANING MARRAKECH - When Lagom meets Handmade

When it comes to adding Moroccan handmade interior goods to any home I deeply honour
"conscious buying and slow design"
A quote used by Author Niki Brantmark of the book, Lagom: Not Too Little, Not Too Much: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced Happy Life. A quote that I've always lived by.

It may sound contradictory, but as an interior sourcer & shopper in Marrakech it is of an utmost importance to select wisely when shopping. I love the art of negotiating but when it comes to shopping, I try to see if I

  • really want it,

  • 'needing' it in a way that it is an item that reflects something they ads value, reflects who I am and what I want.

  • the kind of impact it has on the environment...

All things I learned while living in Sweden. These checkpoints have been serving me well so far where-ever I was.
Over the years, there are three criteria that I have added to the list.
Is it:

  • Locally handmade

  • pure materials

  • traditionally produced

I could also add eco friendly and empowering women and although these criteria are important, we'll have to consider that it is a develloping country where one can only be happy for the local initiatives to realise this too.

The reason I love craftsmanship here is because  nearly everything you find answers to the first three points.

When Annika from Marockoresan asked me if I would be willing to assist her in sourcing Marrakech with her Swedish guests, I couldn't have been happier!
Scandinavians by nature love to select wisely and as they love less is more it will be a perfect opportunity for me to find this one piece that matches their interior.

This week, we'll look into some examples of how to bring a touch of colour into a pure white Scandinavian style home.
I know the new wave is greys, but I honestly think, in a country where sunlight is spare in the winter months, this trend will be only adopted by the few.
What I DO notice is the demand on warm reds for carpets and Beni M'Guild and Boujad are slowly finding their way up to North. Beni Ouarains are nice, but a touch of red just makes it all of a sudden so much more interesting!
