A QUESTION OF TRUST (and a good nerve system)

The other end of the phone seemed dead. A silence that was long enough to get me in a state of alert.

“ Quel envoi ( what shipment)?” Said answered while I could almost enjoy his breakfast by the sounds he was making.

I knew him enough to know that he now was looking around to see if something vaguely reminded him of a possible transport he had promised me.

“Said, the container leaves Marrakech tomorrow. We talked it through for over three months that today all goods would have to be there! I sent you a reminder only Yesterday!”

My voice was getting louder for every sentence.

A new silence made me doubt if the order was even finished, while my stress level was rising higher than the sun on that beautiful morning that seemed so perfect in Essaouira.

“Ah, Bien sûr! Pas de problème” he answered. “ I had simply forgotten about it!”

‘simply?’

‘forgotten?’

By that time, I was already in the car, ready to make a scene, preparing myself on how to solve this situation.

Honestly, I had no idea….

When I parked the car on the other side of the street, I saw he was drinking tea with his neighbour, both relaxed and seemingly in a state of total control. Or, let me rephrase this, a state of NO NEED what so ever for being in control.

He seemed surprised to see me.

"Madame! Ca va?” he asked, smiling ear to ear. Me, I did not see any use in answering this.

“Where are the goods?”

“In the warehouse,” he said while vaguely waving his hand in the direction of the village.

‘The warehouse’ yes, I knew that one. The stable where his goats and chickens had their home when they were allowed. I could only hope they were not sharing the space with my order.

“Madame, calmez-vous! C’est pas bien pou la santé, les stress vous savez!”

He looked at his friend. They obviously thought it was a really good joke.
After they had come to reason, he told me what I could have known.

“ You know ", he said, “ I called my friend Mostapha, he is here in half an hour with his pick up and we will load your goods and take them to Marrakech”

At that moment I couldn’t care less if he meant a Moroccan half-hour….
