A MARRAKECH SHOPPING TOUR - GUÉLIZ

A marrakech shopping tour - Guéliz

Today is Guéliz' day because we love that city district! It's all about that little French touch that we love so much. About art, design and style.

Guéliz ( the name comes from the French word Église, meaning church ) is along the big Avenue Mohamed V. When the weather is sunny but not too hot, it's a nice walk from the Médina all the way there. But remember you'll have some shopping to do and you might want to consider a taxi.

5 BOOKS ABOUT MOROCCO to add to your Santa list

Books, Morocco, Marrakech, Santa

Hello dear readers,

it's been a while! Winter came, also to Marrakech, and with the cold from the High Atlas and the first snow on the Mountain tops ( how I love that view) came also a flue that kept me in bed for almost two weeks.

Time for me to think and make my wish list for Santa!

Books... I was able to sell my precious collection of designer objects when I moved with one container to Morocco but ' NOT WITHOUT MY BOOKS'

I know, I don't have space for this whole library, but i have the pleasure of diving into these boxes every now and then and see a book i had almost forgotten about. Then it's time to showcase it for a while and spend some cosy evening looking at pictures, pleasing the soul...

so, if you happen to know another bibliophile that happens to love Morocco...here is my top 5 on books to make him or her happy!

The thousand-year-old city of Marrakesh is characterised by its pink-colored pisé architecture and its deeply rooted tradition for gardens and green spaces. From the

Majorelle Gardens

and

Le Jardin Secret

to the more recent opened

Anima Garden

s. Gardens are important, both inside the Medina and on the many beautiful often private estates just outside Marrakech. Some of them are called 'Jnane' referring to the days when the well settled families in the city had their own private land outside to spend the hot summers. The cover of this book is taken at Jnane Tamsna, an absolute must visit when in Marrakech! It's a luxury guesthouse but upon reservation you can spend a day out with lunch or diner...

I have a recent addiction! Since I first visited

Le Musée Boucharouite

, I am a fan! I go there and listen to Patrick, the owner of the lovely private Museum. I read the stories that Berber women tell in their weaving. I hear about grief, hope, family life and revolt! It is one of the most fascinating new ways of looking at a carpet.

Marrakech would not have been Marrakech if not for Bill Willis, the magician from Memphis..Willis found a foothold in North Africa in the mid-1960s and never left. “My discovery of the Islamic world has been an astounding experience,” Willis told

Architectural Digest

in 1989.

Working with Paris-based photographer Nicolas Mathéus, American design writer and editor Marian McEvoy spent around five years tracking down 15 of the finest surviving Willis commissions, styling them to look their best, and then recording them, inside and out.

For anyone who wants to add Morocco's spicy design mix into their own home, Maryam Montague, owner of absolutely stunning luxury hotel

Peacock Pavilions

, explains how to do so with the building blocks of Moroccan design. It's a bible for everyone embracing Bohemian chic and a fine example on how to add some colour to your interior.

Introducing Thor Arne Hauer is not easy. He is an extremely gifted photographer and storyteller. All his books are in Norwegian, and I think I need to persuade him to get them translated, but Thor is one of the few people I know that does not care about these things. He loves what he does and that's enough for him. For all of you Scandinavians, I can strongly recommend you to have a look at the way he portrays Morocco. In photos and in stories. For all who can't read Norwegian, his photos are unique and already worth having one of his books on your coffee table. Recently Thor opened a small and exclusive gallery in Essaouira. 5 COOLEST ADDRESSES IN THE MEDINA - Marrakech

cool designer shoppping Marrakech

About a year ago we spotted a new

trend

that was getting stronger. As a designer, it was again hip and a must do to show your brand in the Medina or Guéliz. We're talking Marrakech and we're talking about small, well designed stores that make a refreshing difference in the lined up '100 in a row' small shops.

These 5 addresses are a must on your shopping plan!

cool designer shoppping Marrakech

1) Master Carpet Collector and Designer

Soufiane Zarib

.

While most of the designers move back into the Medina, Soufiane made a smart move. Straight in front of the new Musée YSL! It's rather a beautiful window display on what he offers in one of his 3 places in the Medina but it is THE place to get the right customers and a good first impression. And of course we are not only talking about the carpets! Soufiane has a great eye and is perfectionist also when it comes to architecture.

Rue Yves St. Laurent Marrakech

2) WOOD WOOD WOOD

I happened to pass the shop on my way from the square towards to iron workers. It had always been there but they cleaned and redesigned so that every wooden handmade object looks 10 times more beautiful. The shop was kind of Moroccan closed and I have not more info yet. But you will easily find it!

3)

Le Trou au Mur

One of the few restaurants that managed to have everyone talking about it for a year before it opened!  Le Trou au Mur brings a breath of fresh air to the Marrakech restaurant scene. Chic, laid back, fun, relaxed, intimate and comfortable but, above all, totally serious about food.

Located in an authentic area it is absolutely an address to experience at night! The open fire place only adds to this in the coming months that can be cold in Marrakech. A perfect mix of Moroccan dishes 'new style' and European influences. Le Trou has an escort to take you to your transport or hotel if you feel more comfortable!!

39 Derb El Farnatchi Marrakech

4) Mourad Yamane's trendy design store

I am just blown away about the beautiful new and stylish walnut plates, the beautiful rattan baskets and the all natural design objects he has. Mourad already had a shop of Tamegroute Pottery next door and this is such a beautiful mix.

28 Rue Mouassine Marrakech. ( walk passing Le Fnacq Berbere when you come from the square. Just continue and on your right hand)

5)BIBI art

A newly opened store on carpets and collectors textiles. The shop in the 'Souk des Tapis' was no longer serving the beautiful selection and so they looked around and found a new address in one of the better areas.  Go and have a look! part of the collection is also on exposition in Musée de Mouessine

!

50 Rue Sidi El Yamani (straight ahead and on your right hand when you enter Bab Laksour

GOOD DESIGN IS TIMELESS - Dar Assoura

Marrakech riads Dar Assoura

About 5 years ago, I came across the first pictures of this beautiful riad, well hidden in the heart of the old medina of Marrakech.

Sometimes a picture tells a thousand words. Sometimes, a picture also tells a lot of lies. Like photos that are not updated or in an angle that one might think 'what the... '. Maintenance that is outdated. Change in management or crew that makes all the difference in either way...

So last month, just to be sure, I kind of surprised this hotel with a quick visit. I can only confirm that reality is as stunning as it looks on the photos.

The staff really goes out of their way to make you feel at home.

Most of them are part of the team for almost 15 years. They are the heart of the home and their enthusiasm reflects on the clients. They know what it takes. Especially in Marrakech after a hectic day when one got lost too many times.

An almost 15 years old beauty that proofs: good design really has no age.

Riad Dar Assoura

is still going strong. The decoration is ethnic minimalism, the kitchen among (if not) the most beautiful I've seen here in Marrakech.

Follow me inside and let's go wandering around!
